As educators, we are constantly striving to create a positive and productive learning environment for our students. Sunset Junior High School currently has an electronic device policy that isn’t clear or consistently enforced. As a school we would like to clarify the policy and create clear guidelines for students, parents, and teachers.
Electronic devices are causing distractions, disruptions, and even safety concerns in the classroom. Research shows (see Sources) that students who use their phones during class tend to underperform academically compared to those who do not. Cell phone use also causes disruptions during lessons and affects the overall learning environment for other students.
After careful consideration and discussion with teachers, JSSC (Joint Staff School Committee), Community Council, PTSA, and student body officers representing students from the 2024 and 2025 school years, students may use their electronic devices before and after school, during passing periods, and at lunch. Essentially, we are asking students to put these devices away for no more than 75 minutes at a time during classes.
