Taylor and Meadowbrook elementary schools recently hosted an attendance challenge stretching over six weeks.
With similar size of student population and a similar Mustang mascot, the two schools created an attendance challenge in hopes to increase student academic engagement and interest in learning. This was the first time the schools had hosted an event like this.
“It has been extremely well received by students who are excited to see their totals every day,” said Taylor Elementary counselor Dawn Larson.
Classes received miles as points based on their attendance each day. The highest number of miles a class could get was five miles for zero absences.
Miles were tracked on bulletin boards at each school.
Along the way, students got rewards for milestones such as popsicles, fake mustaches, extra recess, popcorn parties and even pie in a school administrator’s face.
In the end, the classes with the most earned miles received a trophy. Students will keep the trophy in their classes and can carry it to lunch if they desire.
“Regardless, students are enjoying the friendly competition,” Larson said. “Both schools will earn a reward at the end no matter who wins.”
At the end of the event, attendance had improved. The event proved to be a success and it introduced a fun challenge for students and a strong sense of community as everyone banded together to win.
“At the very least, I think it improves the sense of community to have an event that the entire school is working towards.” Larson said.
