Mr. Darren Parry former chairman of the northwestern band of the Shoshone Nation teaching students about deerskin drums

In order for our students to have an authentic experience with Native America, Mrs. Burch (5th Grade) and Mrs. Van Orman (1st Grade) invited Darren Parry who is a former chairman of the Northwestern band of the Shoshone Nation, to come to our school and let the children see what their culture and their nation is all about. It was a true privilege to have this statesman, to have this honorary tribal member come and show us his beautiful artifacts, and what his people did to get their beautiful leathers.

"My favorite part of the whole presentation was when he taught the kids how to become a chief. In that a chief was not about all the warriors, and the bravery that we may think it is, it is actually all about each feather represents a kindness. And the more kindnesses you did the more feathers you received and this is what creates the best headdress. And then you are the best chief because of the kindness that you have. I am truly grateful that we were able to have the opportunity to have Mr. Parry come to our school and give our children such an authentic Native American cultural experience." Jodie Burch
