Adams Elementary School recently had a special reason to celebrate as first grade teacher Katelyn Birt was recognized as the 2026 Outstanding New Educator.
This award is given annually to a standout teacher in their first three years who has made exceptional contributions to students, colleagues and their school community.
Birt’s recognition highlights not only her talent in the classroom but also her dedication to fostering a positive and engaging learning environment for her students.
“I was very surprised, but very honored,” Birt said of receiving the award. “It was a shock.”
For Birt, teaching isn’t just a profession, it’s something she has been passionate about since childhood. She recalls playing “teacher” with her siblings and looking up to the educators who inspired her along the way. Today, she brings those same lessons and influences into her own classroom.
“I’ve tried to take everything I’ve learned from the amazing teachers in my life and bring that into my teaching now,” she said.
That passion is evident in her daily work with her first-grade students. Birt describes being in the classroom as the most rewarding part of her job.
“I love being with the kids every day,” she said. “They bring me so much happiness and joy. Their zeal for life is contagious, and it makes me a happier, better person.”
While Birt was the one recognized with the award, she is quick to credit the team around her. She describes the staff at Adams Elementary as “the very best of the best” and says her fellow teachers have been instrumental in helping her grow professionally.
“I’ve relied on my first-grade team so much for tips and support,” she said. “I feel so honored to work with them, and I take pieces of what they do and bring it into my own teaching.”
Looking ahead, Birt plans to continue doing what she loves most by teaching first grade and making a difference in the lives of her students.
“I’ll teach as long as I can,” she said. “It’s the best thing in my life. I feel like it’s my calling.”
Birt also encourages others to consider a career in education, emphasizing both the challenges and the rewards.
“Teaching can be difficult at times, like any job,” she shared, “but it’s incredibly rewarding. You get to learn and grow alongside your students and watch them do the same.”
Birt’s passion, positivity and commitment to her students embody the very spirit of the Outstanding New Educator Award. Adams Elementary and Davis School District are fortunate to have her as she inspires young learners every day.
