A concert at Bountiful High School turned into a night Branson Bell will never forget after the longtime band director was surprised with Davis School District’s highest teaching honor.
“Every year we choose one as Davis School District Teacher of the Year, and this year it’s Mr. Bell,” said Davis School District Assistant Superintendent Dr. Logan Toone.
Cheers erupted throughout the auditorium Thursday night as district leaders, community partners and Bell’s family interrupted the performance to announce him as the district’s 2027 Teacher of the Year.
Bell was selected from more than 5,000 educators across Davis School District and recognized for his dedication to students and music education.
Colleagues and administrators say Bell’s impact reaches far beyond the band room. Those who nominated him praised his ability to connect with students while helping them grow as musicians and individuals. Following the surprise presentation, Bell returned to the stage to finish conducting the concert.
“On top of teaching balance, intonation and musical standards, we’re also helping students become empathetic people who can pursue rigor and do hard things when times are hard,” Bell said.
“That’s what keeps me coming to school for 6:15 a.m. jazz band, football games and basketball games. We’re making memories that help shape people, and that’s what’s rewarding about it.”
Bell, a graduate of Bountiful High School, said teaching at his alma mater for the past four years makes the recognition even more meaningful.
“Music is the heartbeat,” Bell said. “It’s the one language everyone can participate in and understand. Everyone feels something through music and leaves having gained something. I’m incredibly thankful I get to be part of that at the school that helped make me who I am.
Bountiful High School Principal Travis Warnick said Bell’s passion for students is what sets him apart.
“He wants students to have a great high school experience,” Warnick said. “Yes, through music, but beyond that too. He believes band can help make students’ lives better, and it does.
Warnick also described Bell as “constant motion and just passionate.”
“If the rest of the world was as cool and passionate as Mr. Bell, we would be in a good place,” he said.
As part of the honor, Bell received a one-year lease on a new vehicle from the Young Automotive Group, free gas for a year and insurance coverage through Golden West Credit Union and local businesses supporting educators in Davis School District.
