Davis School District recently hosted Voices of a Nation: Student Perspectives on 250 Years of America, a districtwide speaking event that brought together students, educators and community members to reflect on the nation’s past, present and future.
Held in alignment with the America 250 initiative, the event created a platform for student voice, inviting participants from all grade levels to share original speeches about the American experience. The strong turnout and high level of participation reflected a deep interest in hearing directly from students.
“Being at Davis School District’s Voices of a Nation was inspirational,” said Rep. Stephen Whyte, Utah House District 63. “Students shared perspectives on 250 years of America. These voices represent the next generation of leadership, innovation and civic engagement. They spoke of courage, sacrifice, resilience and hope. Today I truly saw excellence in education.”
The event was designed to extend beyond the classroom. Participation was voluntary, and students submitted speeches for the opportunity to contribute to a broader conversation. Selected speakers worked with educators and mentors to develop their ideas before presenting to a live audience. Topics included unity, identity, freedom, inclusion and the role individuals play in shaping the future.
“I loved hearing young people share their respect for our past and their hopes for the future,” said Rep. Karen Peterson, Utah House District 13. “One of my favorite lines was,‘Our responsibility is not to just inherit America but to shape its future.’ The future is bright.”
Throughout the event, students demonstrated an understanding that the American story is made up of many voices and perspectives. Several speakers emphasized the importance of inclusion and representation, while others focused on unity and the responsibility of each generation to build on the past. Their messages highlighted both the progress the nation has made and the work that remains.
“It was inspiring to listen to Davis School District’s Voices of a Nation as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” said Rep. Paul Cutler, Utah House District 18. “We have some amazing students who put on great performances in the new Instructional Services Center.”
In addition to student speeches, the program included musical performances and opportunities for reflection. The event also highlighted the district’s commitment to creating spaces where students can share ideas and engage with their community. District leaders noted the importance of providing meaningful, real-world learning experiences that prepare students for the future.
“This was not for a grade. It was not required,” said Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Logan Toone. “Students chose to be here. They chose to use their voices, and the response was overwhelming. That passion is what made this event so powerful.”
The event drew families, educators, community leaders and elected officials, all gathered to support students as they shared their perspectives. Many speakers encouraged the audience to consider their role in shaping the nation’s future, reinforcing the idea that the American story continues to evolve.
All event videos will be released together in June for the community to view.
We will share more details in a future post so others can experience these student voices.
Voices of a Nation not only marked 250 years of America, but also demonstrated the value of student voice in education. By creating opportunities for students to share their ideas, Davis School District continues to support critical thinking, civic engagement and a sense of belonging among its students.
