This Hispanic Heritage Month, Davis School District is proud to highlight Silvia Alvey, English Language Development and Spanish teacher at Mueller Park and South Davis junior high schools. For Alvey, teaching is about more than language.
“Teaching is my job, but I also see myself as an advocate, supporting my students both inside and outside the classroom,” Alvey said. “I’m passionate about language education because it not only creates opportunities but also connects people across cultures, fostering understanding and respect.”
Alvey’s journey began as an immigrant and English learner. She started working at Mueller Park Junior High as a registrar and counseling assistant, helping families and interpreting for parents.
“Jo Carmiol asked me about my education in my home country and planted the seed that eventually led me to teaching,” she said. “Later, Jo Richins believed in me and gave me the opportunity to step into the classroom. I’m incredibly grateful for both of these women for seeing potential in me before I saw it in myself.”
Her own experiences as a language learner influence the way she teaches today.
“I understand the challenges of learning a new language and the joy of that first moment when you realize, ‘I understand,’” Alvey said. “I want my students to feel successful and confident, to shine while meeting high standards, and to be proud of who they are and where they come from.”
Alvey’s love of culture extends beyond the classroom. She stays connected to her Nicaraguan roots through community events, including Nicaragua’s Independence Day celebrations and the Hispanic Heritage Parade in Salt Lake City.
“My Spanish students give me hope that my language and culture are something worth learning,” she said. “When they choose Spanish and invest time to discover another world, it shows that cultural appreciation and understanding are growing, one classroom at a time.”
Her advice to students and colleagues reflects her belief in impact and legacy:
“One piece of advice I truly believe in comes from the Scout motto: ‘Leave places better than you found them,’” Alvey said. “Through our choices and actions, we have the power to create positive change in every space and every person we encounter.”
