Jose Hernandez

This Hispanic Heritage Month, Davis School District is proud to highlight Jose Hernandez, a Spanish teacher at Farmington Junior High. Hernandez teaches both dual immersion and traditional Spanish classes, and views his work as both a calling and a privilege.

“One of the core values I hold as a Spanish teacher is the importance of passion—passion for the subject, for education, for my students and for anything that can enhance the learning experience,” Hernandez said.

His career has been shaped by mentors who believed in him. Among them, Rita Stevenson stands out as a guiding influence.

“She was the first to show me that dreams can come true, and her example has been a constant source of inspiration,” Hernandez said. “I’m also grateful for the many teachers and administrators who have guided me and imparted valuable lessons throughout my career.”

For Hernandez, the rewards of teaching come in the form of connections—those lasting bonds with students that stretch far beyond the classroom.

“It’s always a joy when former students stop by to say hello, send thank-you letters or when I see them in unexpected places like Snowbasin,” he said. “We as teachers often don’t realize the true impact we have on our students until they reach out to us.”

His personal motto reflects both resilience and determination.

“Perseverance is the key to success,” Hernandez said. “Life is filled with challenges, some of which can linger for a long time. But when we push through, we grow and become better versions of ourselves.”
