Nhora Anderson

This Hispanic Heritage Month, Davis School District is proud to highlight the work and story of Nohra Anderson, a math and Latinos in Action teacher at Woods Cross High School. For Anderson, teaching is about more than equations—it’s about confidence, growth and community.

“I enjoy working with the youth and watching them succeed and gain confidence in what they do,” Anderson said. “I also enjoy the amazing people I work with.”

Her heritage and background deeply influence her teaching philosophy.

“Being a minority Latina woman gives me different perspectives on life,” Anderson said, who is a native of Columbia. “Culture isn’t only about nationality or skin color—every home creates its own culture. Each one of my students brings their own culture into the classroom.”

Anderson’s story reflects determination in the face of hardship. After years of raising her five children and working full time, she returned to school to complete her master’s degree in education while balancing her role as a mother and educator.

“My greatest challenge was the language, but I was determined to finish,” Anderson said. “Life is always beautiful when you know everything happens for a reason—it makes us wiser, stronger or more humble.”

Her hope is to inspire students and colleagues alike.

“I want students and people in the community to know that they are capable of whatever they set their mind to,” she said. “The very fact that they can breathe gives them the right to be respected.”

Anderson also shares a message of empowerment.

“It’s all in the mind—you become what you think about yourself,” she said. “Dare to take risks and follow your dreams. Don’t be afraid to stand up for what you believe in, even if you have to stand alone.”
