On Thursday morning, Antelope Elementary students, staff and families came together to honor local first responders and remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11.
The entire school gathered outside, lining up by grade around the flagpole. American flags lined the street and walkways leading to the school, setting a patriotic backdrop for the event.
Student body officers opened with a short introduction before carefully unfolding and raising the American flag. Students, staff and guests placed their hands over their hearts and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
Principal Jennifer Pool shared a few remarks, reflecting on the significance of the day and the sacrifices made by first responders, followed by a moment of silence to honor fallen heroes.
Afterward, the SBOs led the school in singing I See a Hero, with students adding sign language to the performance.
First responders introduced themselves and shared a bit about their work in the community, then thanked the school for recognizing their service.
As students headed back to class, the first responders lined the entrances, greeting every child with a high-five, fist bump or hug. They were also presented with handmade cards and drawings from the students, along with donuts as a small token of appreciation.
The event not only honored the courage and sacrifice of first responders but also tied into Constitution Month, reminding students that the freedoms they enjoy are protected every day by those who serve their communities with dedication and heart.
