Solar panels are becoming more common. Since 2012, a record number of panels have been installed on rooftops across the U.S., making solar energy the fastest-growing power source in the country. As part of the Davis School District's efforts to save energy, we're excited to have several elementary, Junior high, and High schools now powered by solar energy. The schools are designed to be "net zero" ready, meaning the solar panels can produce enough energy to power the school—and more.

Odyssey Elementary uses highly efficient building systems (thermal displacement, ventilation, ground source heating and cooling, LED light harvesting, and low water use systems) that are responsive to one another. There are over 1,200 solar panels on the building that convert the sun's energy into electricity for the building's use, including a photovoltaic array on the roof and solar panels that double as sunshades over the windows on the south side of the building. Odyssey Elementary proves that a net zero school costs no more than a traditional school. The students at Odyssey will study and witness firsthand how energy works, how it is used, and how it can be harnessed effectively.

Canyon Creek - produced 1,944,187 kWh to date (220 kWp in size)

Island View - produced 177,580 kWh to date (228.4 kWp in size)

Kay's Creek - produced 2,915,159 kWh to date (294 kWp in size)

Odyssey - produced 2,450,718 kWh to date (318 kWp in size)

South Clearfield - produced 1,143,750 kWh to date (240 kWp in size)

Sunburst - produced 1,340,000 kWh to date (254.6 kWp in size)

West Bountiful - produced 1,189,940 kWh to date (230 kWp in size)

KWP is the peak power of the PV system or panel. Solar panel systems are rated in kilowatts peak (kWp), which is the rate at which they generate energy at peak performance.

KWH is a kilowatt-hour unit that measures the energy an appliance uses in kilowatts per hour. It can also show how much power a PV system generates in an hour.
