Independent living needs can involve (but is not limited to)

Finding and maintaining suitable housing, managing home responsibilities, and understanding lease agreements.
Personal Care and Health:
Managing personal hygiene, understanding health needs, and seeking medical care.
Food and Eating: Shopping, cooking (to the extent able), healthy food preparation and storage.
Transportation:
Learning to use public transportation, driving, or navigating community routes.
Financial Management:
Budgeting, managing money, paying bills, and understanding banking.
Employment and Career Preparation:
Finding and maintaining employment, developing job skills, and understanding career options.
Health Insurance:
Understanding different types of health insurance, enrolling, and managing health coverage.
Social and Recreational Activities:
Participating in community events, building social connections, dating, and engaging in leisure activities.
Self-Advocacy and Person-Centered Planning:
Developing the ability to advocate for oneself and participate in planning decisions.
Access to Community Resources:
Understanding and utilizing local services, support systems, and organizations.
This topic is very broad. We encourage families to evaluate needs that students have to work toward and build their transition team to include learning that will help with these areas.
