Duo Frequently Asked Questions

What is DUO?

DUO is a multi-factor authentication tool (MFA). MFA is an authentication method that requires the user to provide two or more verification factors to gain access to a resource such as an application or online account. Rather than just asking for a username and password, MFA requires one or more additional verification factors, which decreases the likelihood of a successful cyber-attack.

Why do I need DUO?

  1. Prevent 99.9% of Attacks: According to Microsoft, a tool like DUO can prevent 99.9% of attacks on user accounts. It acts as a powerful deterrent against bad actors.

  1. Reduced Password Risks: DUO complements passwords, making them less vulnerable. Even if someone steals your password, they won’t have the additional factors needed to compromise your account. DUO significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access and helps protect users from theft.

  2. Regulatory Compliance: Many industry regulations now mandate a tool like DUO as a security best practice. Implementing DUO ensures compliance with data protection standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the district track what I am doing on my phone?

Duo Mobile cannot see your user data like your contacts, it cannot read your text messages, it cannot access your photos (but it can use your camera to scan a QR code if you explicitly allow that permission), it cannot access your files, it cannot erase your device, it cannot see information about other applications on your device. Duo Mobile cannot track your precise location. In general, the only personal data that Duo Mobile knows about you are the service accounts that you explicitly add to Duo Mobile. However, we do not track any personal data about these accounts -- only the name of the service. (Duo Mobile Privacy Information)

What if I forget my device?

If you forget your device with DUO installed, you can call the call center (25600) to get a temporary bypass code.  The call center will ask you questions to verify your identity.

 Can I use an iPad?

Yes, you can use an iPad rather than a cell phone for your DUO push.  It will just need to have an active internet connection.

What happens if I get locked out?

If you get locked out of DUO for not verifying your login attempt, you can reach out to your STS or the call center at 25600.  If you are locked out of DUO outside of business hours, you will be able to try again in 60 minutes.

What if I don't see the DUO push notification?

If the DUO push isn't showing up on your device, open the Duo Mobile app and click approve.

What if I get a push notification and I'm not trying to login?

Sometimes Microsoft applications will try to refresh their connections in the background.  If you are using a browser to access Microsoft products like Teams, Outlook, or OneNote, refresh the browser window to make sure you are connected.  If you are using the app on your computer, make sure they are connected.  If everything is already connected or you are not working or on your machine, click Deny and click the suspicious button.  DSD network admins will most likely change your password, kick off all sessions and possibly block the account depending on severity. You can go through Encore to reset your password if you have a recovery email in place.
