Work-Based Learning opportunities are built on strong partnerships with community and business members who support students in developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for success in the workplace, all while connecting students to future opportunities.

The Work-Based Learning team in Davis County has partnered with thousands of community mentors to provide students internship opportunities in the following fields:

Internship Qualifications

CTE Internships are a capstone-level course available to students working toward CTE Pathway completion. For more information about CTE Pathways, visit the CTE webpage or contact your high school's CTE Coordinator.

To be considered for an internship, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled as a junior or senior in high school

  • Be on track for high school graduation

  • Demonstrate consistent and positive attendance

  • Be enrolled in or have completed relevant Career &

    Technical Education (CTE) coursework aligned to the internship pathway

  • Provide their own transportation to and from the internship site

  • Participate in an interview with the industry mentor, if

    required, prior to placement

Applications for Fall 2026 Internships will be accepted January 6 through March 6. To be considered for an internship, students must submit an application.

After Submitting Your Internship Application:

Step 1: Check Your Email
Look for a confirmation email in your DSD email account. If you do not receive a confirmation, contact rkrey@dsdmail.net.

Step 2: Application Review
Your internship coordinator will review your application to verify you meet internship eligibility requirements.

Step 3: Placement Notification
Before the end of the semester, you’ll receive an email about your placement status.

Step 4: If You’re Accepted
You’ll get your internship schedule, mentor information, and next steps to prepare. This email will come to your DSD email account.

Internship FAQ'S

Q: How long will the internship last?
A: The length of one semester.

Q: Is the internship during school hours or after school hours?
A: Internships are during school hours and generally require two consecutive class periods on a student's class schedule.

Q: How much credit will I earn on my high school transcript for the semester?
A: .5 credits per each CTE Internship class period.

Q: Will the internship start at the beginning of the semester?
A: No, interns will participate in a mandatory onboarding during the first two weeks of the semester before starting their internship hours onsite.

Q: How many hours is the internship?
A: The internship is generally six to nine hours weekly.

Q: Is this a paid or unpaid internship?
A: In general, this is an unpaid internship used for school credit and to develop professional job skills in your chosen field. 

Q: Do I need to find my own internship site?
A: No, the WBL Coordinator will find a placement for you. If you have a contact for an internship, you may provide the information to the WBL Coordinator, who will follow up to see if it is an appropriate placement.

Q: Do I need to have transportation?
A: Yes. It is the parents’/guardians' responsibility to ensure students have transportation to and from the internship site. 

Q: What will I wear?
A: You will dress according to the dress code at your internship worksite.

Q: Can I coordinate my own internship?
A: Yes, however, students who bring their own mentor are still required to apply. After applying, a WBL Coordinator will confirm your eligibility to participate in an internship and will ensure your internship site meets safety standards.

Medical Scholars Program

About Medical Scholars:

The NUAHEC Medical Scholar Program is a 4-credit-hour college course and experiential program that prepares students for transitioning from high school to college. This course prepares and informs students about submitting applications to competitive college healthcare programs and prepares them to find their place in our future healthcare workforce.

Upon completion, Medical Scholars receive a letter of accomplishment from the Dean of the Dumke College of Health Professions and the Director of the Northern Utah Area Health Education Center, and a certificate of completion and a graduation medal.

How to Enroll in Medical Scholars

To enroll, please submit your request to register for Medical Scholars. A member of our team will review your request and notify your home high school to enroll you in Medical Scholars.

Medical Scholars is available to Juniors and Seniors who have previously taken Medical Anatomy & Physiology.
