Carly Maloney is the district’s 2023 Teacher of the Year

On Thursday morning, students and teachers at Viewmont High file into the auditorium for what they assume is a routine pep rally. Little do they know, one of their teachers has been selected as the Davis School District 2023 Teacher of the Year and will be going home with a brand new car.

Taking the stage, Assistant Superintendent Logan Toone announces the district has a special announcement to make. He explains there are more than 4,000 teachers in the district. This year, one of the educators in the room has been selected as the organization’s top educator.

“Will you please join me in congratulating the Davis School District Teacher of the Year?” he asks the students. They erupt with applause when he finally reveals the teacher’s name: Ms. Carly Maloney.

Coming up to the stage, Maloney is joined by her father, sister, in-laws and her three young children. She hugs her students as they congratulate her.

“You are the best,” she says through happy tears, thanking her school community for the honor.

The surprises do not end there. As part of the award, Maloney will receive a one-year lease of a brand new Kia Niro, courtesy of Young Kia in Layton. She will also receive one year of car insurance provided by Goldenwest Credit Union.

“Carly is one of the hardest working teachers I have worked with in my career of 16 years,” says Viewmont Assistant Principal Hadyn Call. “Not only does she work hard, she gets a lot done and does so with the most positive attitude.”

Maloney has been a teacher for nine years, teaching students of all backgrounds, including AP and CE courses to classes catered to English Language Learners. Maloney also serves as the SBO advisor, an assistant coach to the girls soccer team, a new teacher mentor, an overall teacher mentor, a Utah Teacher Fellow and a Davis Teacher Leader Fellow. She was selected by district leaders and community partners from the year’s cohort of the Best of Davis Award winners. The Best of Davis Awards are the district’s highest form of employee recognition and honors 45 educators each year.

As the Teacher of the Year, Maloney will go on to represent the district at the state level for Utah’s Teacher of the Year.

The Davis School District Teacher of the Year Award is sponsored by Young Kia, Goldenwest Credit Union, KSL.com, Young Automotive Group Caring for Our Young Foundation and Davis Education Foundation.
