Building confidence with Girls on the Run program
Several elementary schools in Davis School District are participating in the Girls on the Run program, an international, non-profit organization helping empower girls and build their boost self-esteem.
While participants are ultimately training for a 5K at the end of the eight-week long course, Cathy Tonge, coach and Odyssey Elementary teacher, says it is more than just running.
"I've seen girls that really were not runners, not very social, and with emotional struggles who come into this and learn that running is a way to handle your emotion, that friendships can be built around hobbies like this, and to have lessons that say, 'yeah, it's hard to have things in life like tests and stuff like that, but here are some ways to handle it.' That is so powerful," Tonge said.
