Enrollment Options for Special Education Students
for 2020-21 School Year

The Special Education Department realizes that many parents are concerned about the health and safety of students.  To alleviate uncertainty as the school year approaches, the following information might be helpful:

Below are options of content delivery that can be explored and considered.  Based on Special Education law, the IEP team has the responsibility to make the decision on content delivery in light of each student’s circumstances. Please take time to meet with your school IEP team as you consider these options. If you have any questions, please contact your school administrator or the Special Education Department.

Traditional School-based instruction – Student attends school for all content and special education services. If you are planning this option, you do not need to contact the IEP team.

On-line Classroom – Davis Connect grades K-12

  • Parent enrolls student. 
  • Student is assigned a grade level gen. ed. Teacher. 
  • Student attends a flexible schedule with a teacher available. They are provided the opportunity to join whole group instruction, daily.
  • If a student is instructed using the Essential Elements standards, a teacher is provided to deliver this content using a flexible schedule during the school day.
  • Grades 7-12 attend from 8:00-3:00 for Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and 3 elective courses.
  • Grades K-6 attend from 9:00-3:30 for Math, Language Arts, Science, and 3 elective courses.
  • If the student has an IEP, the IEP team meets to determine how special education services and related services are provided.
  • Students with an IEP are assigned an on-line special education teacher who delivers specially designed instruction and helps with accommodations and modifications of general education content.

Independent Study – Davis Connect grades K-6

  • Parent enrolls the student.
  • The parent is the learning coach.
  • A district on-line mentor is assigned and checks in monthly to see how the student is progressing. 
  • Student and parents set the daily schedule.
  • If the student has an IEP, the IEP team meets to determine how special education services are provided.
  • If a student is instructed using the Essential Elements standards, a teacher will provide the content that parents will use to instruct the student.

Independent Study – Davis Connect grades 7-12  

  • Parent enrolls the student.
  • The parent is the learning coach.
  • A district on-line mentor is assigned and checks in monthly to see how the student is progressing.
  • Student sets his/her own daily schedule.
  • If the student has an IEP, the IEP team meets to determine how special education services and related services are provided.
  • If a student is instructed using the Essential Elements standards, a special education teacher will provide content that parents can use to instruct the student.
  • Students can be enrolled in independent study and take classes at their boundary school.

Home School

  • Parent contacts Students and Family Resources.
  • Parent completes document for home school.
  • Student is un-enrolled from district.
  • Special education services are not provided.

Dual Enrollment Home School -

  • Parent enrolls student through the Student and Family Resources Department.
  • The student is home-schooled by parent for part of the day.
  • The student with an IEP attends school for some general education core instruction and special education services at the designated time given by the school team (based on the teacher and other provider schedules).
  • The IEP team meets to determine how special education services will be provided.
