PLAN

Effective educators plan instruction and assessments designed to support students in meeting rigorous learning goals as outlined in the DESK standards. Through careful planning of relevant and meaningful learning experiences, effective educators address student strengths and challenges while balancing the best instructional strategies with an understanding of individual student needs.

P.1 Analyzes and uses ongoing assessment data to guide instructional planning

P.1    Analyzes and uses ongoing assessment data to guide instructional planning

What Effective Teachers Will Do

Effective teachers constantly monitor student learning using a variety of both formative and summative information.  Analyzing and using data from these informal and formal “checks” for learning and understanding enables teachers to make data-based decisions about instruction and take students from where they are to where they need to be.  Using data helps teachers meet individual student needs and is necessary for providing appropriate re-teaching and enrichment.

What Effective Teachers Consider

What should students know and how should they be able to use what they know? How will I assess student performance? How will I use assessment data to improve student performance? Do I use data to identify weak areas in enough time to do something about it?

P.2 Designs instruction to meet or exceed DESK standards

P.2    Designs instruction to meet or exceed DESK standards

What Effective Teachers Will Do

Effective teachers use the Davis Essential Skills and Knowledge standards as a framework for their teaching. The DESK links learning activities to the Utah State Core Curriculum adopted by the school, district and state. Following these standards helps teachers and students know where to go (plan), decide what to do and how to get there (teach), and know when the goal has been reached (check).

What Effective Teachers Consider

What should students know? What should students be able to do? How will I know that students have learned?

P.3 Constructs relevant, meaningful learning experiences which meet individual needs

P.3    Constructs relevant, meaningful learning experiences which meet individual needs... (Activities are differentiated to meet individual needs of learners).

What Effective Teachers Will Do

Effective teachers design learning experiences with the needs of learners in mind. When students see the connections between the learning activity and the learning goal, and when they can relate the learning to their own life or to learning in another class or content area, learning makes sense. Illustrating relationships in subject matter and relating new ideas to past knowledge and experience adds interest and depth to learning. Understanding each student’s diverse learning strengths and needs helps the teacher select learning experiences that help students make these connections. When students have something to connect learning to, learning sticks; when information, skills, or knowledge is presented in isolation, students may not retain as much.

What Effective Teachers Consider

Do my instructional delivery methods include auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning methods? Do I utilize alternative methods for assessing student performance and understanding? Do I plan activities that move the student learning forward?

P.4 Sequences and scaffolds lessons which balance depth with breadth.

P.4    Sequences and scaffolds lessons which balance depth with breadth.

What Effective Teachers Will Do

Effective teachers plan units and lessons in a logical structure to increase learning of new information and build skills. They understand learning is built step by step. Appropriate scaffolding ensures students have the prerequisite knowledge and/or skills to accomplish the learning goals for each lesson in a unit and the learning tasks within each lesson. Appropriate sequencing requires unit planning, lesson planning, and activity planning to ensure adequate scaffolding for student learning. As teachers plan units with appropriate sequencing and scaffolding, they balance depth with breadth.Breadth, or covering all that is required in the core, is necessary, but depth adds interest and richness to learning. It increases the ability of students to make connections, retain information, and engage in higher-level thinking.

What Effective Teachers Consider

Do my lessons build on one another, requiring students to use knowledge from previous lessons to accomplish new tasks? Do I scaffold instruction so students gradually take on more of the responsibility?

TEACH

Effective instructional practice requires educators to clearly communicate learning goals, content, instructions, and expectations of students. Effective educators use a variety of instructional strategies and learning activities, instructional time and appropriate pacing, and engage students in higher order questioning, thinking, and metacognitive skills. Educator enthusiasm and interest in the content being studied maximize student engagement and learning.

T.1 Articulates learning goals, content, instructions, and expectations clearly.

T.1    Articulates learning goals, content, instructions, and expectations clearly.

What Effective Teachers Will Do

Effective teachers are excellent communicators; they express themselves clearly. Learning goals, content, expectations, and instructions are explicitly stated so students know what they will learn, why they are learning, and what they are supposed to do and when to do it. This kind of communication increases the ability of students to become self-directed learners. Effective teachers convey accurate information and concepts, use multiple examples of key concepts, and ask questions to ensure clarity. They are cognizant of learners’ developmental level and language abilities and use appropriate tools for language development to support learning.

What Effective Teachers Consider

How can I improve the way I communicate effectively with students? Are class goals, expectations, and objectives clearly communicated to students?
