Substitute teachers making a difference

Substitute teachers make up an integral part of Davis School District, which currently employs just over 1,900 substitutes.

"Substitute teachers are invaluable because they preserve classroom continuity so that learning continues uninterrupted,” said SubSystems Technician Anjel Hislop.

“The truth about substitute teaching is that it is possible for a substitute teacher to make a positive difference in a young person’s life, even in a day.”

Working as a substitute allows for extra flexibility so an individual can choose when they want to work.

Nathan Child has been substituting in the Davis School District for the several years because it allows him to travel for geological explorations several times a year.

“I like teaching, I like the kids, and I like the flexibility of this option because I leave every few months,” Child said.

During a student's K-12 educational experience, they spend almost a full year, on average, being taught by someone other than their classroom teacher.

Individuals interested in substitute teaching for the Davis School District need to have a high school diploma and be at least 20 years of age.  Substitute teachers are paid a daily rate based on their qualification and assignment length. The substitute teacher application is available at www.dsdjobs.net under the Substitute section.

Other substitute options include working in a school office, on the playground, in the library or as a teacher assistant or prep-time specialist. The Davis School District also utilizes bus driver and cafeteria worker substitutes. For those positions, contact Diane Skeen at 801-402-5725 for instructions to apply.
