DESK Standards
What are DESK Standards?
The DESK Standards identify the essential skills and knowledge for each of the fine arts courses. They are the focus of instruction and learning in Davis School District fine arts classrooms.
Priority Standards clearly define the essential skills for each course. These skills are taught and practiced through the study of the course content identified in the Utah State Board of Education Fine Arts Standards.

Graduation Requirements
1.5 units of credit (3 semesters) of Fine Arts courses are required for graduation. These credits must be earned in grades 9-12. Any Fine Arts course will fulfill these requirements.
Additionally, 8.5 units of Elective Credit are required for graduation and all Fine Arts courses can be used to fulfill these requirements.

Davis Youth Policies and Guidelines
PHILOSOPHY:
The purposes and objectives of the Davis Youth Symphony Philharmonic and Orchestra are to:
-
provide greater challenge for the outstanding instrumental music students of Davis School District through experiences of a higher performance level.
-
provide advanced training in musical skills as identified in the National Standards of Music Education and State of Utah Instrumental Music Core.
-
enhance music skills for those who participate, as well as those who will share in the experience in the existing school instrumental programs, as the participants bring new skills back into the classroom.
-
provide an awareness of what other music students are achieving, as well as an awareness of each participants own musical potential.
-
provide camaraderie with other music students.
-
promote community interest and support for music.
RULES AND REGULATIONS:
Each youth symphony member will:
-
be a member in good standing of an instrumental music class in a secondary school of the Davis School District
-
be selected by audition.
-
attend all rehearsals and concerts unless excused by the director or symphony staff member
-
Absences with parental consent will only be excused for valid reasons.
-
Except for emergencies or sudden illness, all excused absences are to be approved in advance.
-
Two consecutive absences will result in the student being moved to the end of the section.
-
Three consecutive absences will jeopardize the student’s membership in the group.
-
-
show professionalism in approach to rehearsals by being seated and warming up 15 min. prior to the scheduled rehearsal time. Tuning will take place 5 minutes before the rehearsal begins.

always exhibit proper rehearsal etiquette
-
dress according to the Davis School District’s Dress and Grooming Standards
-
be responsible for all assigned music; any damaged or lost music must be paid for
-
bring all necessary equipment (including pencils) to rehearsals and concerts.
-
prepare music thoroughly for all rehearsals.
-
accept seating assignments by the director or DYS Staff.
**Infraction of any of the rules or regulations stated above may be cause for dismissal from the group.
AUDITIONS:
Audition dates and requirements will be announced on the website and in instrumental music classes, allowing for adequate preparation time.
FEE:
A $175.00 per student membership fee will be assessed each participating student. This fee is due at the first rehearsal.
REHEARSALS:
Regular weekly rehearsals will be held on Monday afternoons at:

4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. for Davis Youth Orchestra - Shoreline Jr High
-
4:00 PM – 6:30 PM for Davis Youth Philharmonic - Centennial Jr High
STAFF and COACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:
-
Provide all members with appropriate articulations, bowings and markings.
-
Direct sectional rehearsals.
-
Audition student applicants.
-
Assist conductor and students during rehearsal.

Ryan Kemp
Davis Youth Orchestra is an audition only group for students in grades 7-10. Placements in the Orchestra are secured by audition.

About us/Contact
Shanda Stenger graduated from Snow College and then the University of Utah in Music Education. She has participated in each of the areas of Fine Arts. She joined the Teaching and Learning Department in 2017.
Fine Arts are vital for the whole child student education experience.
Charley is a graduate of Davis High School and began working for Davis School District, at Morgan Elementary in Kaysville, in 2005. She joined the Teaching and Learning Department in 2019.
