The
Vikings and the Raven
The raven was sacred to the Viking.
When making long voyages, Vikings took along ravens and released
them. The birds would fly in the direction of land--leading the
Vikings to safety. Thorifinn Karlsefini, brother of Leif
Ericsson, carried a banner with the raven insignia to the new world for
the first time in 1003 AD.
