Davis School District

Washington Elementary is the only Title 1 School on the south end of Davis County. Washington’s students come from four different geographic neighborhoods, yet Washington’s school is united in the pursuit of academic excellence. Washington has a diverse population, which brings a cultural panache to the school community. Washington Elementary offers an after and Summer School Program and provides free lunch all summer long for the entire south end of the district. Most summer days, Washington Elementary serves over 300 children.

The faculty at Washington is one of the most dedicated and skilled faculties in the district. Washington is focused on reading. Every program at Washington focuses on reading proficiency. Every class reads at least one hour each day with teachers, community volunteers, PTA and Title 1 tutors. The library never closes. Students have the opportunity to check out new books everyday to reach their reading goals. If you walk into any classroom or hallway you will see students with their heads buried deep in their books. A literacy committee made up of teachers and PTA volunteers meet at least twice a month to discuss, learn and plan reading interventions. Under the leadership of our two great reading specialists, every teacher, tutor and community volunteer has been trained with research based strategies and practices. Our Volunteer Coordinator contacts, searches for and manages over 85 community volunteers.

Washington believes that a large and rich vocabulary is the hallmark of an educated person. Many students at Washington come from homes where English is the second language and vocabulary acquisition can make a big difference. Therefore, we introduce a new vocabulary word every week. Every adult in the school wears the vocabulary word all week long and every class studies the vocabulary word and definitions.

Washington Elementary strives to welcome, educate, and prepare students for the future!!!
