Attendance
The school day begins at 9:00 a.m. Students should not arrive too early. Teachers are preparing for the school day and there is no indoor nor outdoor playground supervision provided until 8:40. Students are asked to come directly into the multi-purpose room to wait until the first bell rings. No Child Left Behind Regulations are asking us to maintain a 94% attendance rate at our schools.
Tardiness South Weber Elementary continues to strive to improve the number of late students we have every day. Student tardiness is a problem. Frequent absences and tardies slow your child’s academic progress. Children are often embarrassed at being tardy daily. Please help your child develop good attendance habits by seeing they are at school on time.
Leaving School
If your student must leave school during the school day, please send a note or call us ahead to have your child waiting. The child will come to the office and wait for you to come into the building and sign him/her out. It is school and District policy that students do not leave during school hours unless specific permission is given. Please don't expect the school to send your kids out to you without your signature. Your child's safety is of greatconcern to us.
Student Records
All student records are available to parents. Student folders contain results of standardized achievement tests, grade summaries, other tests and reading records.
Telephone Use
Students should use the school telephone only in emergency situations. After-school play arrangements should be made before school hours, at home. Messages from home to students are discouraged except in cases of emergency. We have many students and only one part-time office assistant to relay messages. Your help in this matter will keep the telephone available for school business, conferencing, and emergencies.

Books and Other School Property
Students are accountable for the condition of books and materials used at school. They are charged for damage done in excess of normal wear and tear. Please return any schoolproperty inadvertently left at home.
School Lunch
Our school lunches and breakfast are a great bargain! Lunch and breakfast credits can now be purchased on line. Please note the link to Nutrition Services on our website. You may pay Nutrition Services at the school as well. You may make one check to Nutrition Services for all your students at South Weber. Please list all students on your check and the amount for each one. Students must have money in their account. No credit will be extended for lunch or breakfast. Extra milk may be purchased at the lunch line with a quarter. If you were on a free or reduced program last year, you have an automaticextension for ten days to re-apply and qualify.
Appropriate Dress and Grooming
Experience has shown that student dress influences attitudes about learning. Children should wear clothes that are clean, modest, and appropriate for school. Shorts and skirts must not be shorter than three inches above the knee. Sleeveless tank tops, low cut underarm openings, bare midriffs, hats, and clothing with crude pictures or inappropriate wording are not permitted. Please make sure your students wear very warm clothing in the winter. Because of the frequent windy conditions in our city, our recesses can be very cold. South Weber kids are hearty, but we encourage them to be dressed properly for the weather.
Toys and Games
Please do not allow students to bring skateboards, roller blades, radios, CD players, electronic games, trading cards, dolls, trucks, or other toys to school other than for regular "show and tell." Personal items are not covered by our insurance and teachers cannot guarantee their safety.
First Aid and Medication
It is our policy to try to contact parents when children become ill or injured. The school is limited to first aid only. If your student must take medication during the school day, please contact the school for special arrangements. Students are allowed to carry one school day's worth of personal medication with them. Inhalers carried by the student are permitted as well. Please instruct your children in the safe use of personal medication.

Special Help
The school provides services in speech and hearing, social and psychological intervention, remediation through a Resource Program, and a school nurse. If you have questions regarding these services, please call the school.
Visiting Classrooms
Parents are encouraged to visit in the classroom. Because planned visits cause fewer interruptions to the class, please make pre-arrangements with the teacher and sign in at the office before visiting. The school cannot be responsible for taking care of students who are not registered at South Weber Elementary. Please make other arrangements for school age relatives, friends, etc. who are visiting.
Birthday Celebrations
To celebrate your student's birthday, there will be a monthly birthday table in the cafeteria with a decorated table, and a small gift from the PTA. This is done each month so that every child’s birthday will be incorporated into the school year. State Health Department guidelines recommend we not have home-prepared edible birthday treats. Large surprise parties for teachers take valuable time away from learning and are discouraged.
After School
Teachers will not keep students after school unless prior arrangements have been made with the parents.
Bicycle and Scooter Safety
A student is allowed to ride a bicycle or scooter to school when: 1) A parent has given permission. 2) All riding, safety and courtesy rules are known and followed by the rider, including the wearing of helmets. 3) The bicycle or scooter is walked (not ridden) on school grounds during school hours, this includes the time just before and after school. 4) The bicycle is parked and locked in the proper bicycle rack during the school day. Scooters must be folded and carried into the school.
Weather
Please make sure your student is dressed to fit the weather as all students go outside at recesses and lunch break. Please write your child's name on coats and gloves. If students are not able to go outside, they need a note from home.

Eligibility is determined by the distance from the school a student lives; 2 miles for secondary students and 1.5 miles for elementary students. The Attorney General has ruled that the measurement is to be made in the following manner: "from the center of the street in front of the entrance to the child's home, to the school, by way of the nearest public route, to the nearest entrance to the school property."
