| Canyon Heights first started in 1973 and was called Young Mothers. Lois McGill, as social worker, was the director. Young Mothers schooled 14-15 students and classes were held at Oak Verland Park Elementary. From 1974 to 1976, the school expanded and the enrollment increased from 15 to about 45 girls. In 1987, Betty Brand, a well-known educator, became the director of Young Mothers and changed the name to Young Parents. Betty hired an English teacher, a math teacher, and a social worker. After that, the curriculum continued to expand, home high school diplomas were awarded, and the percentage of graduates increased. A family and consumer science and special education teacher were added in addition to child care directors. From 1995 to 1998, a history/science teacher and counselor joined the staff. In 1998, the young parent enrollment peaked and the day care became part of Head Start. A new school building was finished in 2000, and the school was renamed Canyon Heights. In 2001 Canyon Heights started enrolling "emotionally fragile" students from the other Davis School District high schools. At the present time, the enrollment at Canyon Heights is approximately 110 students. |
