Miss Valerie
Classroom Website
I am assigned to teach core subject areas of English, U.S. Studies, and Health to students which are housed in the Detention Unit at Farmington Bay Youth Center. I teach in a very transitional classroom. At any given moment in time, I will be teaching core subjects to a variety of students that may range in age from 12 to 18 years and are enrolled in grades 7-12.

The following quote is from a book titled TEACHER MAN, written by Frank McCourt. He also wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning book, ANGELA’S ASHES.

“The classroom is a place of high drama. You'll never know what you've done to, or for, the hundreds coming and going. You see them leaving the classroom: dreamy, flat, sneering, admiring, smiling, puzzled. After a few years you develop antennae. You can tell when you've reached them or alienated them. It's chemistry. It's psychology. It's animal instinct. You are with the kids and, as long as you want to be a teacher, there's no escape. Don't expect help from the people who've escaped the classroom, the higher-ups. They're busy going to lunch and thinking higher thoughts. It's you and the kids. So, there's the bell. See you later. Find what you love and do it.”

Cal-cu-la-tions!
When entering the classroom here for the first time, usually the first words out of a student's mouth are : "I hate math." Given a little time, this student changes his or her tune because they realize that it's not as bad as they thought, and they're smarter than what they think. Thankfully, attitudes change!

Math is everywhere in life: paychecks, time cards, car payments, car loans, movie tickets, store sales, sales tax, tips, how many days until my birthday or the last day of school. (You've got the picture!) However, there are other important things in life and their importance is emphasized on posters hanging in my room:

You can' change your past....BUT....you can change your future

Make an effort....not an excuse

Watch your thoughts...they become your words
Watch your words...they become your actions
Watch your actions...they become habits
Watch your habits...they become your character
**Watch your character...**it becomes your destiny

"The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves or rather in spite of ourselves."

"To read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark."

"Thought is the labor of the intellect; reverie is its pleasure."
