A Star is Discovered
It's only once in a big while that a true Hollywood star is discoverd. Among some of those lives the loved, adored, and the well-known Shirley Temple. Shirley Temple is considered among so some of the most successful child stars in the history of film (Shirley Temple Biography, 1). Shirley Temple was a true classic, drinks, dolls and many books and internet sites were made in her honor. She always had a true talent to give, but first she had to be discoverd.
At the age of three and a half, Shirley Temple was enrolled at Meglin Dancing School (Black, 10). Temple's mother "Gertude" was extremely ambitious and pushed her daughter to always do her best (Shirley Temple Biography, 1). Hal Roach didn't think that Shirley had any talent to offer the dance studio (Black, 13). Temple's mother scoffed his remark, although nothing involving films ever happend to Shirley until late 1931.
Temple's mother was right not to give into what other people say. One day after a dance practice as they were getting ready to leave, Jay Gorney invited Shirley and her mother to an audition (Career Highlights, 1). Her mother remembers Shirley in her loose curls and moccasain play shoes walking into the audition room holding another childs hand (Black, 13). Many of the other children were dressed as their best. It was jer curls, dimples, and personality that won Shirley her first jobs in acting.
Shirley recalls, "The man with the slicked black hair payed me scant attention, but the other kept coming backto stare at me. I didn't like his face at all, moon-shaped, jowly, and moist looking, so I crawled under the piano, the only hiding spot in the room. 'We want this one', he said" Black,13)
Even at the beginning of her carrer, she had to work hard, which Shirley was willing to do. As a child, she would be put into a black ice box if she behaved childishly. Instead of rebelling, later in life, Temple wrote that this "lesson in life was profound and unforgettable. Time is money. Wasted time means wasted money means trouble. Time spent working is more fun than standing in an icy black box and getting an earache" (Shirley Temple Biography, 2). Shirley always worked hard to inpress the public in all her movies. The children that Shirley worked with in her first movie all learned quickly that the more time they wasted meant the more money they wasted.
Even during the drpression, Shirely Temple was sheltered bu her parents and her studio. In the first years of it, the studio was in financial trouvle. Shirley's movies "The Little Colonel" and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" put her as No. 1 box office hit in Hollywood, and she pulled her studio out of the "red" (Shirley Temple Biography, pg.2). Even through these hard years, those who watched her movies counldn't help but smile.
Shirley Temple is still known for her blond ringlets appealing lisp, and ability to sing and tap dance (Microsoft Encarta pg.1). Shirley Temple had a true talent to entertain the media with her bold personality. She was known as a "sophisticated performer who often seemed more mature that the adults around her (Microsoft Encarta pg.1)". She had no problem upstanding her experienced costars.
Shirley Temple is loved and adored by all those who have seen her movies. She has a sweet and bold appeal that people love. She has a true talent that has given her an adoring public. To think this all started out with a discovery in a little audition school. Shirley Temple has been known as one of the greatest child stars of history.
