DAVIS SCHOOL DISTRICT
Farmington, Utah
Technology Advancement Plan (TAP)
Leading Davis Schools into the 21st Century
An Annual Developmental Technology Plan
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Davis School District plans to implement a five point program to integrate technology into the educational process. One
of the major goals is to provide the necessary tools and resources that will enhance instruction and strengthen the instructor.
Technology has been and will continue to be one of many vital tools used in education today. This undertaking will
provide equipment to teachers, students and administrators, provide a means of maintaining this equipment, and train staff
and faculty in it's instructional uses. It will also provide opportunities to pilot software selections, infuse technology into
current instructional programs and provide ongoing support.
Objectives:
I. Technical Support for Schools:
- Provide School Technology Specialists (STS's, formally known as SysOps) in each building
II. Equipment for schools:
- Provide schools with the equipment necessary to integrate technology into the instructional process.
- Develop a mechanism for systematic upgrade and replacement of computer technology in the schools.
- Standardize not only the types but the level of equipment found in each school.
III. Training:
- Provide training in the use of Instructional Technology for Teachers, Staff and Administrators
IV. Central Help Desk:
- Provide technical on-going support through a Central Help Desk
V. Instructional Utilization of Technology:
- Pilot Integrated Learning Systems (ILS) software
- Advancement of Internet resources (Intranet and Internet based curriculum)
- E-mail in the instructional setting
- Student and Teacher Presentations
DEFINING MAJOR POINTS OF TAP:
I. Technical Support to Schools:
Twenty-seven (27) new full time School Technology Specialists (STS) positions (formally known as SYSOP) will be
established to provide schools with the necessary technical support to perform routine maintenance of hardware,
installations, and coordination of software and staff development.
Creation of STS Positions:
- Establish a STS Job Description
- Determine criteria for candidates (which may include classified and certified personnel)
- Establish a screening committee to provide an applicant pool from which principals select
- Select school STS's
Cluster Assignments for STS's:
- Positions will be allocated to specific schools based upon student populations within the current high school clusters,
with one full time STS in each high school; others will be assigned to schools according to population demands.
- Each STS will be assigned a home school to be determined by the cluster organization
- A "STS" Coordinator will be designated at the district level
STS Training:
- Training components will be provided through Computer Technology Support (CTS), the District Educational
TECHnology Center (ETC), and Applied Technology Education (ATE), and may include:
- Job shadowing with CTS technicians
- Certified Novell Administrator (CNA) training through ATE
- Customized training in the ETC
- Periodic rotation on CTS help desk
II. School Computer Equipment Upgrades and Replacements:
The Davis School District will provide an ongoing funding source to upgrade and/or replace computers and related
instructional technology equipment in each of the schools.
Funding will be provided through a two fold process based upon a submitted application:
- A portion of district funds, known as a Basic Funding Measure will be allocated to each school for discretionary
instructional technology advancement.
- A second source of district funding will come through a Competitive Grant. Funding for successful participating
schools will be based upon the following criteria.:
- Assessment of current school technology in relationship to district minimum standards
- Computer capable of running Internet, district software and grading program
- Current equipment level
- Building readiness and literacy level of administration, staff and faculty
- Plan for training of building personnel
III. Training for School Support Staff, Faculty, and Administration:
- Provide opportunities to increase the technology literacy of Administrators, staff members and faculty.
- Train school STS's to become proficient in system operations, repair, replacement and installation of computers and
related technology equipment
- Help all administrators, STS's and faculty to integrate technology into the curriculum
IV. Provide on-going Support through a Central Help Desk:
The Davis School District will increase efficient service and help eliminate confusion in Technology Support by providing a
single central point of contact for district employees who have technical problems with computer hardware and software.
- The Central Help Desk will be staffed 10 hours per day, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Each call will be electronically logged. The status of work requests will be electronically tracked by the help desk
staff and the person who made the request for help.
- Resolutions will be placed in a database which can be accessed by STS's before making further calls to the help
desk. Help desk personnel will also be able to access this database.
V. Instructional Utilization of Technology:
The Davis School District will provide "seed money" in the form of "Pilot Projects" to help schools advance in the
instructional and multimedia use of technology in the classroom. This may include, but not be limited to:
- Integrated Learning Systems (ILS) software
- Internet and Intranet based curriculum
- Student and teacher presentation equipment
- Educational uses of E-Mail
