Abstract:
Suggests site to help students find primary sources dealing with the
Progressive Era.

Students will use primary sources to understand important eras of American
history.

Learning Outcomes
Students will search for primary sources explaining the different historical
movements and people of the Progressive Era.
Background
The teacher should visit the site (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/vfwhtml/vfwhome.html,
and http://www.swarthmore.edu/SocSci/rbannis1/Progs/
) beforehand to verify the site contains appropriate information.
Materials
Introduction
Instructional Procedures
1. Students are assigned a certain historical movement or historical
figure from the Progressive Era (EG. Women Suffrage, African-American Movement,
Ila B. Wells, W.E.B DuBois).
2. Students visit the web sites and locate a document referring to the
movement or the figure.
3. Students write down the address, a summary of the document, and whether
or not the document is a primary or secondary source.
4. For each document found, the student must explain why they identified
the document as a primary or secondary source.
5. Students may want to visit search engines (www.hotbot.com) to locate
additional documents about the historical movement or historical figure.
