Students will discover what life was like in Utah in 1896.

Background
The teacher should visit the sites ( http://www.lib.utah.edu/spc/photo/cent2.html ) beforehand to ensure that each site contains appropriate information for your students.

Instructional Procedures
1. Visit the Internet site and have students write a descriptive essay based on the photos viewed at the site.

2. Create a timeline of Utah's attempts to become a state. List the reasons for denial of statehood.

3. Examine the statehood proclamation. Have each student write their own proclamation for a new state.

4. Take the Virtual tour of Pioneer State Park.
