The need exists and doesn’t go away. Just a decade ago, the district’s enrollment topped out at 58,947 students. Since that time, student enrollments have continued to increase. As a matter of fact, the district has added nine elementary schools, one junior high school and one high school in the last decade. The district is currently growing at a pace of nearly 1,000 students per year. To keep up with enrollments, it needs to continue to build more schools in which to educate students. |
Proposed Projects |
New construction, renovations, additions and property purchases - $173 million
The proposed $250 million bond will help the district build new schools and renovate existing schools. Plans include:
• A new junior high school in west Kaysville • Three new elementary schools, one in west Layton, one in West Point and the third to be determined based on growth • Rebuild Wasatch Elementary with a total of 30 classrooms. • Build a Special Education school for medically fragile students and 18- to 22-year-old students. • Add 12 classrooms to Millcreek Junior High. • Add 10 classrooms to Woods Cross High. • Complete 18 classrooms at S. Weber Elementary. • Add six classrooms to Layton High School's phase II addition. • Purchase property for future school sites. |
|
Protect and maintain existing infrastructure - $77 million
The district also plans on protecting and maintaining its current infrastucture - which amounts to more than 10 million square feet - by replacing roofs, boilers and waterlines where needed, and upgrading parking lots, fire alarms and technology systems.

Ongoing Projects |
The District's Architectural and Construction Services Department maintains a website through which you can keep track of the ongoing projects it is involved with. The projects are part of the district's 2006 Building Improvement and Construction Plan and are being financed through bonds that county voters approved in the district's 2006 bond election.

Timing |
This is a good time to build. Construction costs are down. For example, Foxboro Elementary School recently opened in North Salt Lake just east of Legecy Highway. That school cost $15 million.
An elementary school of the same design is now being built in west Kaysville and will cost the district $2 million less - just because it happened to go to bid later when construction costs had fallen from 15 to 25 percent. That school will open in the fall of 2010.
This graphic illustrates that point. |
Employment |
School construction employs local builders. Many of the companies that have been involved in such construction are located in Davis County. All have also been Utah companies and hire local people. Architects, engineers, general contractors, electricians, bricklayers, painters and general laborers are all needed for the projects to be completed.
Local jobs mean more money being invested in the local economy, therefore benefitting all Davis County residents.
