Family and Consumer Science

  • Advanced Interior Design
    This course provides students an opportunity to develop advanced skills applying the elements and principles of design to interiors. Portfolio projects are integrated throughout the course to provide applications as the students continue their study of floor plans, color schemes, lighting, textures, fabrics, furniture design, and style. Appropriate computer design programs are used in this course which may include CAD. The students will explore the various career opportunities related to interior design. A coordinated project that allows applications of interior design skills in a residential, commercial, or school setting may be a component of this course. FHA/HERO membership is encouraged. *Concurrent enrollment available.

  • Clothing and Textiles I
    This course provides the study of basic skills and knowledge of sewing skills through necessary facts and practical 'hands-on' experience. Units of study on textiles, fashion, laundry, care of clothing, and consumer skills will be conducted.

  • Designer Sewing
    This course is designed for students who have interests in the field of design, apparel, textiles, and construction. Individual projects using design principles will be used as vehicles to further develop the students’ skills. Experiences may include pattern design, surface design, principles of clothing constructions, fitting and alteration, custom sewing, home decorating, and other entrepreneurship opportunities. FHA/HERO membership encouraged.

  • Fashion Strategies
    This course is designed for the student who is interested in fashion. Personal fashion types are explored with emphasis on individual characteristics, silhouette, grooming and wardrobe planning. Students learn to identify fashion trends and fads as compared to classic styles. Fashion history, color and design principles are included in this course. Careers related to the fashion industry are incorporated. FHA/HERO membership encouraged.

  • Food Service/Culinary Arts
    This course is designed to train students for career opportunities in the food service/culinary arts industry. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practice safety and sanitation procedures, use and maintain commercial food service equipment. They will perform quantity food preparation as it relates to catering, bakery, restaurant, hospitality, and fast food business operations. Basic knowledge is provided in nutrition as well as skills for retention of nutrients during food preparation and service. Employment and business skills will be emphasized. FHA/HERO membership is encouraged.

  • Life Management
    This course is designed to prepare students with skills to live independently. Skills are developed to help students manage their needs in the areas of interpersonal relationships, housing, clothing, nutrition and food. Management of time, money and resources are emphasized in each area to allow students to be successful at home and in the workplace. FHA/HERO membership encouraged.

  • Study Skills - Teen Living
    Study skills introduces time management, following directions, motivation, library skills, note taking, study habits and techniques, and test taking strategies. Teen Living prepares teens for personal, family, and social challenges by introducing and implementing positive coping mechanisms and promoting of self. The course addresses issues which impact teenagers including self-concept, family and peer relationships, substance abuse, personal loss through death and divorce, dating, teen pregnancy, and child abuse. Emphasis is placed on personal responsibility, critical thinking and taking charge of one's own life.
