DAVIS SCHOOL DISTRICT HONORS TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS AT
EDUCATORS’ HALL OF FAME

April 19, 1999

Farmington. Seventy-five outstanding educators were chosen by their peers for honors, which were bestowed by the Davis School District at their ninth annual Educators’ Hall of Fame. Honorees represent each of 69 schools, counselors, related servers and each level of administration--elementary principals, secondary principals, assistant principals and district administrators.

The Bountiful Automobile Dealers Association has been long-time sponsors of this program that recognizes teachers who are exemplary in their work with students in the classroom. Many of the teachers selected for recognition have also made extensive contributions to education beyond their own schools. Their work has frequently contributed to district programs and often ideas emanating from district classrooms are adopted statewide and even nationally.

Awards were presented following a dinner for honorees and partners at Northridge High School. Individual recognition of each Hall of Fame teacher and administrator was followed by sixteen special awards: three teachers of the year, eight Bountiful Automobile Dealers Association "Horizon" awards, and five Davis School District Foundation "Excel" awards.

A Knowlton Elementary School teacher who distinguished herself as an innovator while leading the Bountiful Elementary faculty in creating the SEP (Student Education Plan) and currently as teacher of a successful multi-age classroom was selected as the district’s Teacher of the Year. JoLyn S. Baldwin has dedicated hundreds of hours training teachers across Utah and beyond in the effective implementation of the SEP. Mrs. Baldwin will be the district’s nominee for Utah Teacher of the Year.

Two extraordinary teachers were named Secondary Teacher of the Year and Elementary Teacher of the Year. They were presented with $1,000 award each, sponsored by Representative Kevin Garn and his wife, Tanya.

The Secondary Teacher of the Year, Darrell Bailey, has been referred to as a legend at Viewmont High School both as a teacher of Current Issues and Social Studies and as a builder of responsible young men and women. In addition to regular classroom responsibilities, Mr. Bailey spends Wednesday nights at school to help students.

Betsy Thurgood, Elementary Teacher of the Year, is becoming a legend in the West Point Elementary School community for her exceptional classroom work and also for leading the way in developing an ambitious Outdoor Learning Center. Not only has she coordinated community resources in bringing the Center to reality, she has written curriculum and trained teachers as well as organizing student leadership in developing the ultimate use of the Center.

Eight "Horizon" awards were presented by David Nelson, president of Willey Honda. The $500 awards, sponsored by the Bountiful Automobile Dealers Association, went to:

Cheri Caldwell, a special education teacher at North Davis Junior High School
Nancy Carlson, fifth grade teacher at Adelaide Elementary School
Louise P. Lochhead, business teacher at Davis High School

The four Hall of Fame administrators for 1999 were selected by their peer administrative organizations for extraordinary leadership in their schools and in the district organization:

Elementary Principal of the Year  -  Craig L. Poll  -  Reading Elementary
Secondary Principal of the Year  -  Steve M. Mangel  -  Bountiful Junior High
Assistant Principal of the Year  -  Robert M. Steele  -  Centerville Junior High
District Administrator of the Year  -  Steven T. Cottrell  -  Mathematics Supervisor

The honors for teachers become deeply important when the faculties of schools make the selections, some as large as 90 or more teachers. Many of these teachers are quiet in their endeavors in the classroom, meeting with a group of students each day in an elementary classroom or teaching as many as 200 or more students. The commitment to an energetic, thorough and sometimes innovative approach to inspiring students to learn is demanding. Every teacher has spent hundreds of hours-learning new techniques, new programs, new subject areas and usually financing the tuition themselves. Assembling resource materials, planning curriculum, creating interesting activities pertinent to the lessons, assessing--all demand intense commitment. Often a teacher will recognize needs and new methods to address those needs. They may devote many hours to district or school committees seeking higher ground to enable learning.

These are teachers who exceed expectations in their abilities to educate:

  • Jamelle Avai, a sixth grade student at Washington Elementary School, is known for initiating noteworthy projects at his school.  To help the Service long-term care facility, he obtained donations of baskets, grass and toys to fill the baskets for 16 children. After Jamelle decided the school needed a choir, he wrote a letter to a retired teacher requesting she consider helping.  She accepted to be director and around 70 students participated.  Jamelle is a good student, friendly, a peacemaker, and he is considerate of students who need a freind. An all-around guy, Jamelle plays bass in the orchestra and enjoys sports including Junior Jazz, basketball, and football.
  • Suzie Petersen is a creative and enthusiastic teacher at Monte Vista Elementary.  She was instrumental in developing a school-wide reading plan and adding a phonics focus.  One of the first to use the SEM curriculum compacting model for gifted students, she also emphasizes character education with a program for parents.  Mes. Petersen teaches all subjects with hands-on applications, she individualizes student instruction and parents are invited to share their careers with students.
